Chaos after the storm

Chaos after the storm: Staying calm and keeping faith

Have you ever experienced devastation after a storm? How can you stay calm and keep your faith amid the chaos that surrounds you?

The Chaos

Recently, we were left dazed after Typhoon Rai hit our hometown. The devastation broke our hearts and disrupted our lives. Some lost their loved ones and their livelihood. Many slept with no roof over their heads.

We were grateful we survived the storm. But as we faced the havoc it created, our emotion was pushed to its lowest. The badly hit suffered trauma and abandonment. Water scarcity and no electricity challenged our patience. Can you keep your peace when standing in long queues for water, gasoline, and bank transactions? Downed communication lines and internet connections made us nervous as we could not contact the people we care about.

The situation was exacerbated when the price of basic commodities to survive skyrocketed beyond acceptable. This may not have affected those who can afford to buy. But how about the low-income earners or those who have just a little money in their pocket?

Fear and worry heightened as we suffered the aftermath of the storm.

Stay Calm

Can you stay calm when your life is turned upside down?

In confusion, it is difficult to find that inner calm. We become anxious when we lose grip on things or situations.

As the chaos engulfs us, we tend to forget we have a God who can calm the strongest storm in our life. Mark 4:35-41, “Jesus calms the storm”, reminds us that God is with us even when we do not realize it. It teaches us to trust in God, who has the divine power and control over all creation. Just as Jesus was sleeping and trusting in His Father in the middle of the storm, He calls us to stay calm and place our complete trust in God.

Keep your faith

Mental, emotional, and physical anguish can overwhelm our hearts and crash the little faith we have. Distracted by the whirlwind of worry and fear, it’s easy to lose our focus on Jesus. When we shift our eyes away from Him, we lose our footing and start to sink.

Let us learn from Peter’s experience in Matthew 14:22-33, “Jesus walks on water”. When the disciples saw it was Jesus walking on water, Peter requested to let him come to Him. Jesus responded, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water. But when he diverted his attention from Jesus to the boisterous winds and waves around him, his faith wavered and he began to sink in water.

Friend, in our life’s journey, there would be perils along the way, challenging our faith. Like Peter, we may stumble and let fear overcome us. But we must not forget to cry out for help to our savior, Jesus Christ, who has an outstretched hand, ready to pull us up and keep us from drowning.

To stay on top of life’s chaos, let us fix our eyes on Jesus. In His presence, we find rest, comfort, and experience lasting peace.
