Joyful Anticipation of Jesus Christ’s Coming: An advent reflection

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with great joy

Are you excited to celebrate Christmas?

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, many are now preparing for the season of joy. Christmas trees, lights, and decorations are set up, signs of the coming festivity of Jesus’ nativity.

Our Christmas celebration may be different this year, with restrictions and limitations. Family gatherings and Christmas traditions may no longer be possible.

In whatever way we celebrate Christmas this year, it should be anticipated with joy and excitement in our hearts. The birth of Jesus is our victory, the fulfillment of God’s promise to His people, and the establishment of His Kingdom that reaches to the ends of the earth.

Isaiah 9:6-7 prophesied the reign of our Lord’s Kingdom.

A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, “Wonderful Counselor,” “Mighty God,” “Eternal Father,” “Prince of Peace.” His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David’s successor, from now until the end of time. The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this.

Christmas is the time we commemorate the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ.

She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins. Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel,” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”

Matthew 1:22-23

The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”

Luke 2:10-11

As we commemorate Jesus’ birth, let us also remember His death– the fulfillment of God’s plan to save humanity. Jesus’ death was a perfect sacrifice to save us from our sins. And as we prepare for the Christmas season, let us also try to reflect and examine ourselves for what we can offer to Christ our Lord to receive His saving grace.

Peter instructed us to be holy, to be on guard, and to thrive in Christ as we wait for the Day of God, for we do not know the day of Christ’s return.

And so, my friends, as you wait for that Day, do your best to be pure and faultless in God’s sight and to be at peace with him. But you, my friends, already know this. Be on guard, then, so that you will not be led away by the errors of lawless people and fall from your safe positions. But continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, now and forever! Amen.” (GNT)

2 Peter 3:14,17-18

Now, let us turn our joy and excitement to the second coming of Christ. Are you ready for the day of His return? Are you prepared to see Him face-to-face?
