What can God do with our brokenness?

Messiness, weakness, heartbreak, failure, and imperfections may imply brokenness. No one wants to go through this state, but the twists and turns of life can sometimes lead us to feel despair and defeated.

Everyone does not like the feeling of brokenness, but it brings a great power that produces transformation, spiritual growth, and true freedom. It can direct us to profound joy and fulfillment.

What benefits can you get from being broken?

Before brokenness, we take pride in showing that we are self-sufficient and self-dependent. We may be stubborn and self-centered. Our sins against God and others can cause feelings of emptiness and unworthiness. There may be times when no matter what we do, we still sink deeper and deeper. We just can’t get out of the darkness that we are into until we become aware of our brokenness.

When we become broken, our pride is stripped away from us. The very pride that blocks blessings is crushed, and a road is paved for God to make His way unto us.

     1. God draws near to the broken ones

“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

Do you ever realize that when you are in pain, God is closest to you?

Psalm 34:18 assures us of God’s presence in our suffering; not only with us, but near to us. In our brokenness, God stays with us and helps us get through.

    2. God uses our brokenness for His glory

Being broken places us where we recognize our need for God, the exact position where God wants us to be. In our moments of weakness, we can let go of our pride and accept that we need His help. God patiently longs that we allow Him to step into our life. He desires surrender of our will to Him and our trust that He can bring good from our broken pieces.

As we call on our Lord and open our heart to Him, Christ reveals Himself in us. Our surrender to God leads us to experience the depths of His love.

    3. God chooses the imperfect for His perfect works

We live in this broken world where imperfection exists. In the Bible, God called the broken, meek, weak, and shamed to show His mighty works. He sent His son, Jesus Christ, not for the righteous but for the broken and lost. (Mark 2:17)

Have you ever felt ashamed of your imperfections and weaknesses?

Then take courage because Paul boasts and delights in his weakness, hardships, and persecutions, for God’s power is greatest when we are weak.

“He has said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore, I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, and in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong.”

4. Transformation through brokenness

How does God use brokenness to transform us?

Just like Jesus, who was glorified after he suffered and was broken, we must also be broken for God’s glory to shine through our lives.

John 12:24 teaches us the need to be broken no matter how painful the process may be.

“I am telling you the truth: a grain of wheat remains no more than a single grain unless it is dropped into the ground and dies. If it does die, then it produces many grains.” (GNT)

Something in us has to break and die so that the Holy Spirit can grow within and transform us into the person God created us to be from the very beginning.

Your response to brokenness

Brokenness may come from different directions: bad habits, poor choices, wrong decisions, or from another person’s brokenness.

Whatever its cause, how you respond to it is crucial. You can deny and wallow in brokenness. Or you can embrace it and ask God to heal, restore, transform and free you from bondage.

When you allow God to take control, you will experience peace and profound joy.
